Short answer: cross-play does not mean cross-save, a cloud backup is not cross-save, and a game selling on five storefronts proves neither. Of the seven cozy games here, only Palia and FANTASY LIFE i document cross-save a solo player can rely on, and FANTASY LIFE i’s is manual. Disney Dreamlight Valley documents cross-progression while contradicting itself about PlayStation. Minecraft has none — only a one-world copy through a Realm. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a one-way transfer tool and a backup you must enable in advance. Stardew Valley and Pokémon Pokopia document nothing, which is silence, not a promise.

This guide is for one person, not a group: you own the game or are about to, you are switching devices, and you want to know what travels with you. If the question is whether you and your friends can share a world, read the cozy games cross-play and cross-save guide — that one is about sessions, this one about your save file and your receipt.

Every claim comes from a first-party developer, publisher, or platform-holder page, checked on 2026-08-26. Where none exists we say undocumented: nobody published an answer, which is not the same as the answer being no.

Four goals, five words, and why the difference costs money

Decide which of these four things you want. They sound alike and run on different machinery.

  • Continue your progress on a second platform you own — cross-save, or cross-progression: one record, reachable from elsewhere. The only mechanism that leaves one record reachable from both platforms at once.
  • Move to a new or replacement console — a console-to-console transfer: one-way, one-time. Afterwards the data is on the new machine and gone from the old.
  • Reach the same world as a friend elsewherecross-play: different platforms, one live session. It says nothing about where your solo save lives.
  • Keep what you already paid forentitlement, or cross-buy: whether the purchase is honored on a second platform. Usually it is not.

The fifth word sells the most duplicate copies. Cloud backup, or cloud save, restores a save inside the same ecosystem — Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud, PlayStation Plus cloud storage, Xbox cloud saves. It covers a dead console, not a change of brand.

So, plainly: cross-play does not imply cross-save, a cloud backup is not cross-save, and being on several stores proves nothing about either.

The tool below reads the same verified matrix as this article. Pick one game and one goal for that answer alone.

Pick the game, then the thing you actually want to keep

Cross-play, cross-save, a console transfer, a cloud backup, and a purchase are five different questions. Pick one game and one goal to see only what an official page documents for that pair.

Save transfer and cross-save at a glance

The columns are the four goals. Statuses: confirmed, limited (documented, with exclusions that change the answer), transfer-only (a manual export-import, no sync), and undocumented.

Read the blanks as blanks. A publisher who has not written a cross-save page has not promised you one.

Set this up before your first session

Some of these steps cannot be taken later. That is the whole reason this article exists.

  1. Palia — link before you press Skip. A fully linked Palia account is made at palia.com and linked on each platform. Skip creates a local account whose progress stays on that console profile, cannot be linked afterwards, and is lost if the device is unlinked.
  2. FANTASY LIFE i — link an Epic Games account. Not a Level-5 ID; no Level-5 account appears in the official cross-save documentation. On iOS and Android the Epic account is linked using an Apple or Google account.
  3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons — switch island backup on now. It exists only from game version 1.4.0, needs an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and must be enabled in advance on the original console.
  4. Minecraft — same Microsoft account on both devices, plus an active Realms trial or subscription before you move a world.
  5. Disney Dreamlight Valley — read your own platform’s current page, because the help center disagrees with itself specifically about PlayStation.
  6. Stardew Valley — no developer account to link. ConcernedApe runs no account service, so lean on the platform’s own cloud backup, which restores only inside that ecosystem.
  7. Pokémon Pokopia — no game-specific account to link, but a Nintendo Account plus a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play and for Save Data Cloud.

Palia and FANTASY LIFE i: the two that really carry a save

Palia: the account is the save

Singularity 6 documents cross-progression through a fully linked Palia account: progress, friends list, and achievements travel with the account, not the console. The negative control on the same support pages is what makes that trustworthy rather than marketing — skip the linking step and “you will not be able to access your progress or game data anywhere else.”

Palia publishes no console transfer article and does not need one; account-based progression covers it. Unlinking a properly linked account preserves progress and purchases, while a never-linked local account’s data is gone for good. The game is free, but Palia Coins are platform-exclusive and balances cannot be combined, though content unlocked with them works everywhere. One caveat before you treat a Switch as your safety net: Nintendo’s own Palia page states the game does not support the Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup feature, and requires a persistent internet connection. Conditions: Palia support on cross-platform play and account linking.

FANTASY LIFE i: cross-save exists, but you have to tick the box

FANTASY LIFE i: The Girl Who Steals Time supports cross-save through an Epic Games account, and it is not a background sync — the detail readers get wrong most often. To upload, open the Main Menu, choose Save, and tick the cross-save update option before saving; the save-complete message confirms it. Then download it explicitly on the other platform. Miss the box and your progress stays where you were playing.

Console transfer is confirmed but delegated: the official guide says no separate purchase is needed moving Switch to Switch 2 or PS4 to PS5, and links out to Nintendo’s and Sony’s procedures. Otherwise cross-save requires a separate purchase per platform, with two exceptions inside single families — PlayStation Cross-Buy, where one digital purchase covers PS4 and PS5, and the Switch to Switch 2 carry-over.

Disney Dreamlight Valley: a contradiction Gameloft has not resolved

Read this before you spend anything.

Gameloft states that cross-progression exists, and one help-center FAQ announced cross-save on PlayStation as of 18 June 2025. At the same time, at least five live Gameloft pages still describe the game as cross-save compatible on all platforms except for PlayStation consoles — and one of them carries a more recent last-updated date than the announcement itself. Both versions are published, both are current, and Gameloft has not reconciled them. We will not resolve it for you, because we cannot: check the page for your own platform, and treat the PlayStation answer as unsettled rather than settled in either direction. Separately, the Apple Arcade “Arcade Edition” is excluded from cross-save with everything outside Apple Arcade.

The account situation deserves the same care. Gameloft’s cross-progression articles name no account for the purchased version; the only one named inside a cross-save statement is the Apple Account, for the Arcade Edition. A Gameloft Cloud Save Account exists, but it sits under the help center’s Twitch Drops section, says only that it protects your progress, and is never tied to cross-progression — do not treat it as the cross-save account.

On purchases the rule is blunt: you must buy the game on each platform you want to play on. Expansions and Adventure Packs are platform-specific, so new lands are only reachable where they were bought, though other expansion content — Royal Tools, Dreamlight Duties, items, characters — still works where you own the base game. Two documented exceptions live inside PlayStation. A free PS4-to-PS5 version upgrade travels on the same PSN account, and PS4 players who play on a PS5 with that same account keep their Founder’s Pack content. Free and purchased Moonstones are shareable across platforms except on PlayStation consoles, an exclusion Gameloft writes inline in the same sentence. No console transfer article exists anywhere in the help center, verified by enumerating all 20 sections and 494 articles.

Minecraft: a Realm is a moving van, not a sync service

Minecraft has no automatic cross-save and no cross-progression. It has one documented manual route, and knowing what that route really is protects you from expecting more.

You need an active Realms trial or paid subscription. On the source device, upload your single-player world into a Realm world slot. On the destination device, sign in with the same Microsoft account and use Download World. One world at a time, by hand.

The proof that this is an export-import rather than a sync is in the result: the world arrives renamed, with - Copy appended. Two copies now exist and neither knows about the other. Realms is a hosted server product being used here as transport — that works, but it does not become a save system by being used as one.

Console transfer is confirmed only inside one console family: the official Minecraft help center documents moving worlds from PS4 to PS5 through Play, Worlds, Old Worlds, Download World, resting on PlayStation Plus cloud storage. A first transfer may take longer than normal and must not be cancelled unless prompted, to avoid data loss. No official page describes a save move between console brands.

Cross-play is bounded strictly by edition: Java only with Java on Windows, Mac, and Linux; Bedrock only with Bedrock on Windows 10/11, Xbox, Switch and Switch 2, PS5, PS4, and mobile — and Java and Bedrock players can never play together. Ownership follows the same logic: no general cross-buy, each platform routed to its own storefront, and the only genuine bundle is on PC, where Java and Bedrock ship together and do not extend to consoles.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons: the island backup trap

Three facts about this game are misreported constantly, and all three matter before you touch a new console.

It does not support the standard Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud. Nintendo’s save data and multiplayer FAQ says so outright. In its place is a dedicated, game-specific island backup, available from game version 1.4.0 or later and described as protection against console failure, loss, or theft. It needs a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and it must be enabled in advance on the original console. Switching it on after the console dies is not an option.

The Island Transfer Tool is a move, not a copy. Nintendo documents transferring an island through a separate downloadable application installed from the eShop onto both systems. The requirements are specific: the game updated to the latest version on both, each user’s Nintendo Account from the source linked on the target, both systems online, and any existing Animal Crossing save data on the target deleted first. Afterwards, the island is gone from the source system.

There is no cross-save here to find. The game ships on no platform outside Nintendo’s own, and the same FAQ states you can create only one island per system even with multiple games. Do not infer cross-save from island backup, from the shared Nintendo Account, or from the game existing on two Nintendo generations. Nintendo also sells three separate products — the Switch game, the full Switch 2 Edition, and a paid Upgrade Pack whose store page states it requires Animal Crossing: New Horizons to play. Owning the base game is a prerequisite, not a grant. For the rest of that release, see our Animal Crossing 3.0 and Switch 2 guide.

Stardew Valley and Pokémon Pokopia: when the sources say nothing

Stardew Valley

ConcernedApe operates no Stardew Valley account service, so only platform-holder accounts apply. No first-party page documents a save moving or syncing between platforms: the official FAQ has no entry on cross-play, cross-progression, save transfer, or cloud saves; the troubleshooting guides never cover save file locations or moving saves; and the Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox product pages list no cross-save feature. That is documented silence, not a documented “no” — reason enough not to buy a second copy expecting your farm to follow.

Console transfer is undocumented here too. The nearest official document is Nintendo’s system-level Switch 2 transfer guide, which names no specific game and warns that some Switch titles may not be fully compatible. A system-level mechanism is not a game-level guarantee. The one documented cross-platform route is a route for play, not for saves: the developer’s mobile multiplayer guide, an experimental 1.6 feature where a phone joins a farm hosted on a PC by IP address, with advice to back up first. Your own save stays where it is. Cross-buy exists once and stays in one family: the official PlayStation page covers the PS4 and PS Vita versions under a one-time license.

Pokémon Pokopia

Pokopia needs a Nintendo Account plus a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play and for Save Data Cloud. Cross-save is undocumented for the simplest reason available: the Nintendo US store page lists the System field as Nintendo Switch 2, so there is no second platform to sync with. Do not infer cross-save from Save Data Cloud, from Cloud Island, from GameShare, or from the shared Nintendo Account — Cloud Island is an in-game feature, not the Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud.

No Pokopia-specific save-transfer documentation exists either. The support articles cover updating the game, Cloud Island, multiplayer, Mystery Gift, Dream Islands, and DLC access; none addresses save data location, backup, or transfer. Only game-agnostic system-level mechanics are documented, and the compatibility guide Nintendo links from that article covers which Switch games run on Switch 2 — not a save-transfer matrix, and it never mentions Pokopia. Save Data Cloud is supported on the US, UK, and AU store pages: a backup against a failed console, not portability. The Expansion Pass DLC is tied to the Nintendo Account that bought it, and family-group lending is same-platform sharing, not cross-buy.

Before you buy a second copy

No purchase of a game itself crosses ecosystems. Every documented game carry-over lives inside a single platform family: FANTASY LIFE i’s PlayStation Cross-Buy and its Switch to Switch 2 carry-over, Stardew Valley’s PS4 and PS Vita license, and Disney Dreamlight Valley’s free PS4-to-PS5 version upgrade on the same PSN account. Some content does travel even when the game does not: content unlocked with Palia Coins is accessible on all platforms, though the Coins themselves stay platform-locked; Disney Dreamlight Valley’s free and purchased Moonstones are shareable across platforms except on PlayStation consoles; and some Dreamlight Valley expansion content — Royal Tools, Dreamlight Duties, items, characters — still works on other platforms where you own the base game.

Nintendo’s generation upgrades are purchases, not gifts — the Animal Crossing Switch 2 Edition and its Upgrade Pack are separate products, and Stardew Valley follows the same pattern. Palia is free but sells Coins that stay where they were bought. Minecraft’s only real bundle is Java plus Bedrock on PC.

Three questions save the money almost every time. Does the publisher name an account you have to link? Is the sync automatic, or does it need an action from you every session? And does the page promising cross-save mention your platform by name? If the answer to the third is no, you have found silence, not permission.

For choosing which platform to buy on, compare the cozy games by platform guide. If the save sits on a child’s profile, the cozy games parent guide is the companion setup pass.

FAQ

If a cozy game has cross-play, will my save follow me to another platform?

No, and that assumption is how people end up buying the same game twice. Cross-play means players on different platforms share one live session; cross-save means one progress record can be opened from another platform. Minecraft proves they are separate: Bedrock Edition cross-plays across many devices, yet no official Minecraft page documents automatic cross-save.

Is a cloud backup the same as cross-save?

No. A cloud backup — Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud, PlayStation Plus cloud storage, Xbox cloud saves — restores a save inside the ecosystem it came from. It covers a broken console, not a platform switch. Animal Crossing: New Horizons proves the difference: Nintendo says the game does not support the standard Save Data Cloud, and ships a separate island backup instead.

What should I set up before my first session so I do not lose progress?

Link the account the game itself names, before you play. Palia needs a fully linked Palia account made at palia.com, because pressing Skip at first launch creates a local account that cannot be linked later. FANTASY LIFE i needs an Epic Games account. Animal Crossing: New Horizons needs island backup enabled in advance, with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Does Disney Dreamlight Valley support cross-save on PlayStation?

Gameloft’s help center answers this two ways and has not reconciled them. One FAQ announced PlayStation cross-save as of 18 June 2025, while at least five live pages still call the game cross-save compatible on all platforms except PlayStation consoles — one of them updated more recently than the announcement. Treat the answer as unsettled and check your own platform’s page before buying again.

Which cozy games let me move a save to a new console?

Three routes are documented here. Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses the Island Transfer Tool, a separate eShop application installed on both systems that moves the island one way and removes it from the original. Minecraft documents a PS4-to-PS5 move inside the PlayStation family. FANTASY LIFE i sends you to Nintendo’s and Sony’s own transfer guides, with no repurchase.

Will buying the game again on a second platform bring my purchases with it?

Almost never across ecosystems. Every documented carry-over here stays inside one platform family: PlayStation Cross-Buy for FANTASY LIFE i, Stardew Valley’s PS4 and PS Vita license, and Disney Dreamlight Valley’s free PS4-to-PS5 version upgrade on the same PSN account. Palia is free to download, but its Coins stay on the platform that sold them.
