Sometimes you need to swap Pokemon out. Dismissing a follower sends it back to its house or habitat. There are three ways to do it.
Method 1 — Interaction menu: Walk up to the following Pokemon, press A, and select “Dismiss.” The Pokemon waves goodbye and walks back toward its home.
Method 2 — Party menu: Press the minus button to open the Party screen. Each follower is listed with its Specialty and current Comfort Level. Press X on a Pokemon to dismiss it.
Method 3 — Auto-dismiss: If you fast-travel to another region, all followers are automatically dismissed and return home. This means you need to recruit new followers every time you change regions, which is a good opportunity to use region-specific teams.
Dismissing a follower has no negative effects. The Pokemon’s Comfort Level stays the same, its friendship does not decrease, and you can recruit it again immediately.

Running with a full party of five followers is always better than running with fewer, even if the fifth Pokemon does not have a Specialty you actively need. Here is why.
Passive Specialty effects stack. Two Pokemon with gathering Specialties collect more than one. Even if the second one is less efficient, it is still free value.
Friendship increases faster. Pokemon that follow you gain friendship passively over time. Walking around with a full team means five Pokemon are building friendship simultaneously instead of sitting idle at home.

Follower Behavior and Pathfinding
Followers in Pokopia have surprisingly good AI. They navigate around obstacles, take shortcuts over bridges, and generally keep up with your movement speed. But there are a few quirks worth knowing.
Followers stay on the same terrain. If you cross water using Surf (from a Piplup follower), only the Piplup follows across. Other followers wait at the water’s edge until you return or they find an alternate path.
Tight spaces cause bunching. In narrow cave corridors, followers stack up and can block your backwards movement. If this happens, dismiss one temporarily or move to an open area to let them spread out.
Followers pause during cutscenes. When a request triggers a conversation, your followers stand still and wait. They resume following once the cutscene ends.
Followers do not follow into houses. When you enter an interior, followers wait outside. This is by design and does not affect their Specialty use — but it means indoor crafting does not benefit from follower buffs.
Speed differences. Larger Pokemon move slightly slower. Snorlax, Torterra, and similarly large species lag behind if you are sprinting. Smaller Pokemon like Pichu and Eevee keep up easily. This is cosmetic and does not affect their Specialty activation radius.
Legendary and Rare Pokemon as Followers
Legendary Pokemon can follow you once they are fully befriended, and they come with enhanced Specialties that are stronger than their regular counterparts.
Legendary followers have a 50% larger Specialty radius. A regular Bulbasaur’s Grow Specialty might cover 5 tiles, while a legendary like Celebi covers 7-8 tiles with its version of the same effect. This makes legendaries the most efficient followers in the game.

- Keep task-specific teams in mind. Before heading to the mines, swap to your mining team. Before a farm session, swap to farmers. The few seconds of swapping saves minutes of manual work.
- Rotate followers for friendship. Pokemon that follow you gain friendship faster. Rotate your less-befriended Pokemon into follower slots periodically to spread friendship gains across your roster.
- Use your starter. Your starter Pokemon always has a strong Specialty and high base friendship. It should be in your party more often than not.
