Rocky Ridges is the mid-game region of Pokemon Pokopia and home to 24 Pokemon species across cave systems, mountain peaks, and volcanic vents. The region introduces the Cave habitat tier, the smelting pipeline, and the first wave of Fire and Steel-type Pokemon. Most species cluster around either the surface mountain zones or the deep cave systems, and the volcanic vent area is its own micro-biome with specialty spawns.
This is the complete list of every Pokemon that spawns in Rocky Ridges, where to find them, what time and weather windows apply, and the habitat tier each one needs. For broader regional context, see our Pokopia all regions guide, and for the parallel starter region see the Withered Wasteland Pokemon list.
How Rocky Ridges Spawns Work
Rocky Ridges has three sub-biomes, each with different spawn rules:
- Surface mountain — Plains Lv2 to Plains Lv4 habitats, mostly diurnal Pokemon
- Cave system — Cave Lv1 to Cave Lv5 habitats, mostly nocturnal Pokemon
- Volcanic vents — Cave Lv3+ with fire-aligned decorations, fire-type Pokemon
Spawn density is higher in caves than in Withered Wasteland because the region’s habitat ceiling is taller. You can hit Cave Lv5 in Rocky Ridges (required for Heatran), which unlocks the deep-cave rare spawn pool.
Common Rocky Ridges Pokemon (10 species)
These are the species you encounter in your first hours after unlocking the region.
| Pokemon | Sub-biome | Time | Weather | Habitat | Specialty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Geodude | Surface, lower caves | All day | Any | Plains Lv2 | Boulder Push |
| Onix | Mountain peaks, deep caves | All day | Any | Cave Lv3 | Tunnel Bore |
| Mareep | Grassy mountain ledges | 6 AM-6 PM | Any | Plains Lv3 | Spark (electric basic) |
| Machop | Mountain trails | 8 AM-6 PM | Any | Plains Lv3 | Lift |
| Cubone | Surface and cave entrances | All day | Any | Cave Lv1 | Bone Club |
| Aron | Mid-cave deposits | All day | Any | Cave Lv3 | Steel mining |
| Vulpix | Volcanic vents | 8 AM-6 PM | Sunny | Plains Lv3 | Ember (fire basic) |
| Growlithe | Mountain trails | 8 AM-6 PM | Sunny | Plains Lv3 | Flame Wheel |
| Roggenrola | Lower caves | All day | Any | Cave Lv2 | Rock Tumble |
| Numel | Volcanic vents | 8 AM-6 PM | Sunny | Plains Lv3 | Magma Storage |
Onix is the gating species for cave depth progression. It can carve tunnels and unlock cave zones that no other Pokemon can reach. If you are stuck on Cave Lv3 progression, Onix is usually the missing piece.
Vulpix and Growlithe are the first fire-types most players befriend. Both are required at one point or another for cooking recipe progression — see our cooking guide for which recipes need fire-aligned helpers.
Uncommon Rocky Ridges Pokemon (10 species)
These need habitat tier 3+ and often a specific weather window.
| Pokemon | Sub-biome | Time | Weather | Habitat | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lairon | Mid-cave deposits | All day | Any | Cave Lv3 | Aron evolution, steel-tier mining |
| Boldore | Lower caves | All day | Any | Cave Lv3 | Roggenrola evolution |
| Slugma | Volcanic vents | 8 AM-6 PM | Sunny | Cave Lv3 | Lava generation |
| Magby | Volcanic vents | 8 AM-6 PM | Sunny | Cave Lv3 | Fire boost specialty |
| Phanpy | Muddy mountain pools | 7 AM-5 PM | Rain | Plains Lv3 | Rain-only spawn |
| Houndour | Mountain trails | 8 PM-4 AM | Any | Plains Lv4 | Night patrol, fire-dark hybrid |
| Drilbur (rare variant) | Deep cave dig zones | All day | Any | Cave Lv4 | Higher tier than wasteland Drilbur |
| Larvitar | Deep cave with sky access | 8 PM-4 AM | Any | Cave Lv3 + Sky Lv1 | Bridge spawn from wasteland |
| Tyrogue | Mountain peak training grounds | 6 AM-12 PM | Sunny | Plains Lv4 | Lift bonus, branch evolution |
| Mawile | Hidden cave nooks | All day | Any | Cave Lv4 | Steel-fairy hybrid, surprise spawn |
Houndour is one of the few Rocky Ridges spawns that works on the surface at night. Most night-active Rocky Ridges Pokemon are cave-dwellers, so Houndour fills a niche if you want night patrols outside the cave system.
Mawile has a hidden spawn pattern — it only appears when at least 3 other Steel-type Pokemon are already in your roster. The cave nooks where it spawns are not marked on any map, so you have to find them by exploration.
Rare Rocky Ridges Pokemon (3 species)
The trophy spawns of the region.
| Pokemon | Zone | Time | Weather | Habitat | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bagon | Deepest cave with Sky Lv2 access | 8 PM-2 AM | Any | Cave Lv5 + Sky Lv2 | Pre-evolution of Salamence (top-tier flier) |
| Larvitar (storm variant) | Cave Lv5 zone during sandstorm | 8 PM-2 AM | Sandstorm | Cave Lv5 | Stronger variant than wasteland Larvitar |
| Aerodactyl | Sky-accessible mountain peak | 8 AM-12 PM | Sunny | Plains Lv4 + Sky Lv2 | Ancient flier, fossil-related |
Bagon is the trophy of Rocky Ridges. It requires both Cave Lv5 (for Heatran) AND Sky Lv2 access — the cave needs to have an open vertical shaft connecting to the sky above. This dual requirement means most players catch Bagon as a side benefit while building the Heatran habitat.
Aerodactyl is the gate species for fossil-related content in the postgame. It does not appear in Withered Wasteland or any other region, so missing it in Rocky Ridges means waiting for postgame fossil quests to fill the slot.
Rocky Ridges Legendary: Heatran
Heatran is the volcanic legendary of Rocky Ridges. Spawn requirements:
- Time: night (8 PM-2 AM)
- Weather: sunny (clear, no rain)
- Habitat: Cave Lv5 with smelting station within 10 blocks
- Comfort target: 75
- Food: Charred Roots and Magma Berries
Heatran is the second legendary in the recommended hunt order, after Celebi. For the full build blueprint, food sourcing, and common mistakes, see our Heatran guide.
Best Pokemon to Befriend in Rocky Ridges
If you are still in the early hours of Rocky Ridges, prioritize this order:
- Onix — required for cave depth progression
- Vulpix or Growlithe — first fire-type for cooking
- Geodude — basic Boulder Push for cave construction
- Aron — steel-tier mining unlocks better tools
- Slugma — lava generation for the Heatran habitat
After these five, you have everything needed to start prepping for Heatran. The rare spawns (Bagon, Larvitar storm variant, Aerodactyl) can wait until your habitats are higher-tier.
Common Mistakes in Rocky Ridges
- Skipping Onix — without Onix, deep cave progression stalls. Players who try to brute-force Cave Lv4-5 with other Pokemon waste hours.
- Building Cave Lv5 without sky access — Bagon needs both. If you are committing to a Cave Lv5 build for Heatran, plan the vertical shaft early so Bagon comes free.
- Missing the volcanic vent micro-biome — the vent area has 4 species that do not spawn anywhere else (Vulpix, Slugma, Magby, Numel). Treat it as its own zone.
- Skipping side quests for the Cave Explorer’s Map — without the map, finding hidden caves takes 3-4x longer.
- Wrong food at the volcanic feeder — fire-aligned Pokemon need fire-aligned food. Mixing in plant-only ingredients drops their interest dramatically.
What Rocky Ridges Pokemon Unlock for the Rest of the Game
- Onix → all later cave progression
- Vulpix/Growlithe → cooking recipe tier 2
- Aron → steel mining for Bleak Beach prep
- Slugma → magma forge crafting
- Bagon → Salamence (endgame flight option)
- Heatran → volcanic crafting tier
The mid-game pivots heavily on Rocky Ridges progression. Players who breeze through often find themselves under-equipped for Bleak Beach water management and Skylands sky habitats. The region progression order in our all-regions guide recommends a roughly 1:1 time split between wasteland and ridges before moving to Bleak Beach.
