The useful answer to “which Pokémon are in Withered Wasteland?” is not a fixed spawn map. Pokémon Pokopia asks you to construct habitats: valid combinations attract eligible Pokémon, while area, time and weather can change the result. An eligible visitor is not guaranteed to appear immediately, and another Pokémon can appear instead.
The Habitat Dex groups 49 Wasteland habitat recipes. That number describes recipes, not a regional Pokédex total. This page therefore separates the scripted Pokémon needed for the first chapter from reproducible early habitats. It was reviewed on 2026-08-25.
For every numbered Pokémon in the main game, use the 300-entry Pokédex and location tracker.
Story Pokémon you actually need
| Pokémon | How it enters the chapter | What it unlocks or does |
|---|---|---|
| Professor Tangrowth | Scripted opening companion | Directs the restoration and Important Requests |
| Squirtle | Scripted opening encounter | Water Gun; later helps create rain |
| Bulbasaur | Scripted opening encounter | Leafage for restoring grass |
| Charmander | Scripted opening encounter | Lights the first Campfire |
| Hitmonchan | Exercise Resting Spot habitat | Rock Smash after its request |
| Scyther | Tree-shaded Tall Grass habitat | Cut; later supplies Chop for the Center |
| Timburr | Boulder-shaded Tall Grass habitat | Build specialty for house and Center projects |
| Drilbur | Behind the breakable wall east of the ruined Center | Rototiller for planting |
| Magikarp | Speak to it on the southern coast | Splash, which lets Ditto jump |
| Slowpoke | Seaside Tall Grass habitat | Its yawn drives Yawn Up A Storm |
| Kyogre | Scripted coast encounter during the rain story | Makes the rain persist |
| Onix | Trapped in the cave until the rain softens the blocks | Bulldoze specialty for the Center |
These are progression roles, not proof that each species is a permanent free-roaming spawn in one named sub-zone.
Best early habitat recipes
Habitat objects must be connected, not merely placed somewhere in the same yard. Start with the exact small combination, wait for the Habitat notification, and only then decorate around it.
| Habitat | Exact core build | Eligible Pokémon documented in the Habitat Dex |
|---|---|---|
| Tall Grass | Four connected regular Tall Grass tiles | Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Oddish, Geodude; Charizard is very rare |
| Tree-shaded Tall Grass | Any Large Tree connected to four regular Tall Grass | Scyther, Scizor, Bellsprout, Skwovet; Pinsir and Heracross are rarer |
| Boulder-shaded Tall Grass | One Large Boulder connected to four regular Tall Grass | Timburr, Machop; Gurdurr is rarer |
| Hydrated Tall Grass | Four regular Tall Grass connected to water | Squirtle, Cramorant, Sliggoo; Wartortle and Blastoise are rarer |
| Seaside Tall Grass | Ocean water connected to four regular Tall Grass | Slowpoke; Slowbro and Slowking are very rare |
| Elevated Tall Grass | Four connected regular Tall Grass at high elevation | Pidgey or Hoothoot; Pidgeotto and Noctowl are rarer |
| Illuminated Tall Grass | Four regular Tall Grass connected to any light | Venonat; Venomoth is rarer |
| Pretty Flower Bed | Four connected Wildflowers | Pidgey, Hoothoot, Combee, Magby, Eevee; Pidgeotto is rarer |
| Fresh Veggie Field | Eight connected vegetable fields | Drilbur or Rowlet; Excadrill is rarer |
| Exercise Resting Spot | Punching Bag connected to any Seat | Hitmonchan |
| Smooth Tall Grass | Four Dry Tall Grass connected to the Smooth Rock | Onix |
| Rain Dance Site | Two Castform Weather Charms on the rain side connected to plated food | Goomy during rain |
The early story also introduces a Campfire and eventually weather-related furniture, but do not assume that every attractive-looking arrangement is a registered habitat. Open the Habitat Dex after the on-screen recognition appears.
The fastest progression set
If your goal is to clear the first chapter rather than collect every possible visitor, build in this order:
- Exercise Resting Spot for Hitmonchan and Rock Smash.
- Tree-shaded Tall Grass for Scyther and Cut.
- Boulder-shaded Tall Grass for Timburr and Build.
- Break the east wall and complete Drilbur’s interaction for Rototiller.
- Seaside Tall Grass for Slowpoke when Yawn Up A Storm asks for it.
- Free Onix after Kyogre makes the rain persist.
For the Pokémon Center, prepare 20 Lumber, 20 Stone, 10 Leaf and 10 Vine Rope, then assign Onix, Timburr, Scyther and five other Pokémon. The full Withered Wasteland walkthrough explains the source discrepancy around the Center material table and the route to Environment Level 5.
Time and weather are modifiers, not a universal schedule
Some Habitat Dex entries have explicit conditions:
- Oddish appears from Tall Grass only at night.
- Charmander and the very rare Charizard do not appear there during rain.
- Pidgey and Pidgeotto use Elevated Tall Grass outside nighttime; Hoothoot and Noctowl use it at night.
- Venonat and Venomoth at Illuminated Tall Grass are nighttime visitors.
- Sliggoo at Hydrated Tall Grass requires rain.
- Goomy at Rain Dance Site requires rain.
Those examples do not establish one global “day window” for all Wasteland Pokémon. If a recipe does not list a clock or weather condition, do not add one.
Why a valid habitat may look empty
Serebii’s habitat documentation gives three important caveats: appearances can vary by location, time and weather; eligible Pokémon are not guaranteed; and another Pokémon may appear.
Use this checklist:
- Confirm the game recognized the habitat.
- Make every required object physically connected.
- Remove decorative objects that may break the connection or form a different recipe.
- Check a documented day, night or rain restriction.
- Leave the immediate area and return instead of rebuilding instantly.
- If the wrong eligible visitor appears, wait and try again.
- Keep residents comfortable and avoid overcrowding the exact build.
For Slowpoke specifically, use actual ocean water, not an inland pond. For Elevated Tall Grass, elevation is part of the condition. For Smooth Tall Grass, use the specific Smooth Rock found near the Onix cave.
Story list versus Pokédex completion
Withered Wasteland habitats can attract evolution-line members and species that are useful much later. That does not mean all of them are needed before you leave the first area. Conversely, Kyogre is part of the story but should not be treated as an ordinary habitat visitor.
Use three separate checklists:
- Story: the twelve roles in the table above.
- Habitat Dex: the 49 Wasteland recipes and their eligible visitors.
- Main Pokédex: the game’s 300 numbered entries, plus separate Event and Basin Pokédex sections where applicable.
Keeping those scopes separate prevents a common mistake: turning a habitat category into a fabricated regional spawn total.
